We’re back from an exciting week at Janome Institute in Orlando, Florida where Janome introduced the all new

Top of the Line Horizon Memory Craft 12000

If you missed the introduction video, watch it here. The features shown in the video are just the beginning. We will be having the official launch on October 1st. Watch for details.

Here’s a review of our week:

Friday, September 2nd

Rick, Lynn and I arrived in Orlando and met with other Janome dealers. We were excited to see Jim and Diane Stutsman who have closed their Sewing Room store, but are starting a new venture. Check out their Online sewing site and Facebook page. They have made a DVD of Diane’s popular Foot Class and Jim is writing apps as well. We will have the DVD available for $25.

Saturday, September 3rd-The Unveiling!

I started with a class on the Digitizer with a review of Version 3 features and an introduction to new features in Version 4.

Lynn took a class making a quilted bag using the Janome quilt binder. It should make a great class. Watch for it.

Finally at 6PM, dealers from around the world were introduced to the Horizon Memory Craft 12000! They didn’t tell us to bring kleenex! If you watched the video, you know why I needed them. Some of the features that I loved right away include:

11.7″ space to the right of the needle

9mm stitch width

4 embroidery hoops, including one 11.8″ long

Still no bulky embroidery attachment, but an easy to snap on linear motion arm

AcuFeed Flex-what you love on the Horizon 7700, but even better!

Easy Stitch selection like the Horizon

Variable width zigzag

Horizon link-the ability to create stitches and embroidery even when you’re not near your machine

The extra lighting is really cool as well as the built in magnifier

The regular and straight stitch needle plates (both included) just pop off without a screwdriver

After the introduction, we got to see the machine up close and visit other vendors. We got to see Annie Moody and the newest Hoopsister quilts. Wait til you see the new Cathedral Windows with no binding strips and the new “Earth to Quilters” Block of the month. We also finally caught up with Anne and Kym from the Sewing Revolution in Australia. They were the talk of Janome Institute with the most popular classes. We can’t wait for you to see Kym this weekend! If you haven’t registered for the Sewing Revolution Trunk Show yet, you don’t want to miss it. (The Hands on class is full)

Sunday, September 4th

I started with a class on the Artistic Quilter 18″ quilting machine on the Majestic Frame. I got a lot of tips and ideas that I’m anxious to share with our Artistic Quilter owners and those considering purchasing a long-arm. Also introduced was a 26″ Artistic Quilter, a new and improved Artistic Freedom Frame and automated Quilt Motion for either 18″ or 26″ Artistic Quilters.

Lynn took a free-motion class from Pam Holland, with tips on using the Janome convertible free motion foot. She is an amazing and talented quilter from Australia. Check out her Bayeux Tapestry It is hard to believe it is all done with free motion applique and quilting! Pam says only Janome machines provide the quality of stitch needed for her work!

In the afternoon, the 3 of us took a Digitizer version 4 class together with Valora Hammond. You are going to be amazed at the new features in Version 4!

Monday, September 5th

The 3 of us took classes all day on the new machine! We spent the morning exploring all the new sewing features. It is so easy to use-of course- and lots of fun! We spent the afternoon exploring embroidery and the new Horizon link-pretty cool. I was most impressed by how quiet this machine is. With over 50 machines embroidering at the same time, you could have a conversation and hear the instructor with no problem. At first I thought we were the only ones sewing, but then I looked around and saw that everyone else was too! I can’t wait to show you all the features October 1st.

Monday evening, we were honored to receive an award for the Top 25 dealers in the country.

We thank you, our customers, for making this honor possible!

Tuesday, September 6th

I started with another class from Pam Holland (see above), learning free motion tips with the free motion convertible foot, while Lynn made a pincushion project using the Artistic Sewing Suite. You’re going to love this project. In the afternoon, Lynn took a serger class and I took a software class learning so much more about the Artistic Sewing Suite from Soni Grint, an excellent software educator. I was fortunate to also have her work with me individually and got some great ideas. Janome introduced Artistic Suite Version 6 with additional features, including a new Crystal application. Watch for details as this becomes available. It is so much fun!

Wednesday, September 7th-Last Day

I spent the day in 2 different serger classes. My last project was especially fun with 2 instructors from Sweden; another project you’re going to love! Lynn took some classes with lots of great ideas for Club projects. It’s going to be a fun year ahead.

Yes, Rick took classes too, but the business and service classes aren’t nearly as interesting to write about!

Click here to see pictures from the photographer Pure Motif Photography.

The wedding dress

April purchased her dress at David’s Bridal. She loved the dress, but wanted more embroidery, which was only on the top of the dress. The skirt and train were plain satin. I placed the dress on my copy machine and using Digitizer was able to digitize matching embroidery, which I did using ivory embroidery thread with silver metallic outlines. Digitizer also allowed me to make arrangements of the designs, including figuring exactly the number of motifs that would fit all around the bottom. Using my 11000SE and clothsetter table, I was able to perfectly position and embroider the train and the entire bottom of the gown. Beading and sequins were added by hand! You know my daughter is special for me to use that 4 letter word!

For the veil, I made a rolled hem on the 1100D using silver metallic thread and added bugle beads, sequins and crystal beads sewn by hand with invisible thread.

close up of train embroidery

Violet’s Flower Girl dress

Violet actually designed her own dress. I made it as close as possible to her sketch, using ivory bridal satin that matched April’s dress perfectly and the same embroidery designs that I used on April’s gown. However, I used solar active embroidery thread for the flowers and stems. Inside, Violet’s embroidery looked just like April’s. But, outside in the beautiful sunny day, she had purple flowers! Again, I used my 11000SE and clothsetter table for perfect embroidery. I also used the ruffler to create lots of extra poof as requested by Violet.

The Ring Bearer Pillow

I again used Digitizer to create another arrangement with embroidery designs used on the dresses with the letter “N” inserted in the middle. It was all embroidered in one hooping in the square hoop on the 11000SE. Piping was made and attached to match the attendant’s dresses using the Janome piping foot. My grandson, Dominick, took great care of the pillow as Ring Bearer.

The favors

I used the new Artistic Sewing Suite software to create the sides and bottoms of the favor bowls. 27 sides were cut out at once using the square hoop and the cutting blades. I also created applique files to add satin stitching around the sides- 2 plain sides, 1 side with “April & Todd” and 1 side with the date 7-9-11 for each basket. All sides were joined using the multiple zigzag stitch and invisible thread. Purple chocolate covered sunflower seeds wrapped in tulle were placed in the baskets.

Other wedding sewing included:

A clutch bag for April featuring a monogram and beaded trim inserted using the narrow base zipper foot.

Drawstring bags for the attendants and Violet were made by sewing satin circles together with sewn on trim.

Alterations on attendants dresses using the concealed zipper foot and the D rolled hem foot-2 of my favorite Janome feet.

Silver satin pocket squares for the tuxedos made with narrow hems on the 1100D.
